POSTMODERNISM

✮⋆˙

 POSTMODERNISM

Postmodernism is a cultural movement that emerged in the mid-20th century as a reaction against modernism. Modernism was characterized by a belief in progress, reason, and objective truth. However, postmodernism rejects all of that ideas and emphasizes the importance of subjectivity, ambiguity, and multiple perspectives.

Some significant characteristics of postmodernism are :
Self - reflexivity - Often draw attention to their own construction and artifice. This can be done through a variety of techniques, such as breaking the fourth wall, using non-linear narratives, or incorporating elements of other films.

Intertextuality - Often reference and draw upon other works of art and literature. This creates a complex web of connections and meanings, which can be challenging but also rewarding for viewers.

Pastiche - Often borrow from and combine elements of different genres and styles. This can create a sense of disorientation and surprise for viewers, as well as a challenge to their expectations.

Dark humor - Explore complex and challenging themes. This can be a way of making difficult subjects more accessible to viewers, or of challenging them to think about the world in a new way.

Skepticism of grand narratives - Challenge traditional notions of truth and reality. They may suggest that there is no single, objective truth, or that truth is relative to the individual or culture that produces it.

Relativism - May explore the ethical implications of relativism, such as the question of whether or not there is such a thing as objective right and wrong.

Irony and parody - Often use irony and parody to challenge traditional values and beliefs. They may also use these techniques to explore the nature of reality and representation.

Examples of postmodernism works :
Most of the media texts nowadays are postmodernism since it can be either a pastiche, or intertextual of something. Even a "remake" of a song also considered as a postmodern work.

An example for this it's Táo Quân ( Gặp Nhau Cuối Năm ) - a Vietnamese annual comedy show in which described as a package of almost every postmodernism characteristics.
The first characteristic that it has is dark humor and irony, they often use this to create jokes, in order to create a metaphor of every problems and scandals from last year. For instance, in Táo Quân 2023, there is an imitation of a beauty contest in this year Tao Quan, with a purpose to address the increasing amount of beauty contests around Vietnam, or the phrase that the God of Social Media and Economic say after the assistants tell them that they don't have not enough incivility to announce the Top 5, which remind us of the scandal of a man threaten to beat people on the high way.
